The latest regs on U.S. Airways' web-site (Oct '06) says trans- Atlantic bikes fly free, but the main baggage page makes no mention of this and when I called customer service they said it was changed as of Dec '06 and trans-Atlantic now costs $80 each way IF it's over L+W+H limit of 62 inches, which seems quite likely for any non-folding bike (amtrak boxes are 69x41x8.5).

You do have to sign a release form, so pack carefully (and remove that rear derailleur, even if you are shipping the bike with the wheels in place--a broken hanger is not worth the risk--unless you're feeling up to 1225km fixed or single.)
